Annual Shareholder Letter #2

Gen Y Finance Guy Entrepreneurship 2 Comments

Dear Fellow Shareholders, This is my second letter to you. Boy, what a year 2020 was! I’m going to start this letter by beginning at the end of the previous one, which came out four weeks after the COVID-19 Pandemic started to dominate our daily lives. I regularly describe 2020 as the longest and fastest year on record. We entered a generationally defining event abruptly, without any advance notice to prepare for the changes that would be forced upon our way of living. We got to witness some pretty wild things in 2020: Shelter in place and stay at home orders. Non-essential businesses forced to close. Massive unemployment, particularly in industries hit the hardest by the government orders given to …

Bam! That is the best word I can use to describe January. It started with a Boom! had a few a Bangs! and ended with a Bam! What does that even mean? It means there were a lot of good things that happened while under incredible overwhelm during certain points in the month. Many of you know that I took a nice long break in November, but what many of you don’t know is the grueling schedule I started on December 1st and maintained for about eight weeks. I went from enjoying the beach and working only a few hours a day in November to working like a full-blown maniac. I was waking up between 3 am and 4 am …

Happy New Year! Beginning this month, the GYFG post format has changed – specifically in how I write it. For the prior 71 monthly updates, I would sit down at the end of the month and write it in one fell swoop. But I’ve decided to write this post incrementally throughout the month, for four reasons: (1) It helps me break it down into more manageable writing sessions. (2) I want to start treating this monthly update more like a digital “newspaper” of my life (mostly financial, but not entirely). (3) This new format will allow me to capture and reflect on more throughout the month (faster feedback loop). (4) It will also allow me to share mini-posts (articles) within …

As I type this my family and I are coming to the end of our stay at the beach. The last 30 days were filled with much-needed rest, relaxation, and recharging. We checked into the beach house on November 1st and completely unplugged from work until the morning of the 9th. We then proceeded to work a modified schedule from the 9th until Thanksgiving. And finally, we had the 26th through the 29th completely work-free. One thing I learned is that a week is about all I need/want in terms of being completely unplugged. Being productive is a big part of who I am and where I realize fulfillment. That said, the modified work schedule was very enjoyable and needed. …

I have officially made it to vacation! I’m typing this with an unobstructed view of the pacific ocean beyond my screen. I was finally able to take my foot off the gas in early October, right before my birthday. We started to prepare for a “soft landing” on our final “descent” into vacation by going out to Lake Meade the second week in October. It was glorious! We turned off our phones for three days. This was the first time in 15 years of going out to the lake that I didn’t bring a stack of books out to the lake with me. I told my wife and her parents that I planned to just relax…like, really relax, in a …

[Guest Post] C-Money Shares His Path From Earning $35,000 to $175,000+

Today I’ve asked another one of my proteges to write a guest post. “C-Money” and I first crossed paths back in 2012 when we found ourselves working at the same company. You will get a more detailed back story below, but the short story is we stayed in touch after we both had departed from our previous employer. Then in 2018, I was hiring for a new position on my team and that led us to an opportunity to get closer both on a personal and professional level. I’ve always derived joy from seeing others succeed, especially when I can help them open their minds to get past their own self-limiting beliefs (BTW – these are not always conscious beliefs). …

Summer officially ended September 22nd but you wouldn’t know that based on the weather. I read it somewhere that September was a record-setting hot month. I’m typing this on October 3rd and it is 100 degrees outside – ugh! I’m not really a fan of the hot weather and look forward to cooler days and nights ahead. I always tell people that the weather is perfect about seven months out of the year where I live but the other five are…well, less than perfect. I can’t wait to open up the house and let some fresh air inside instead of running the AC 24/7. The weather wasn’t the only thing that was hot in September. My business set another new …

August was another crazy month and there doesn’t seem to be a slowdown coming in September in terms of the growth in my business – with the same true for Mrs. GYFG, who is in Real Estate. It has been challenging to manage the growth while also trying to be good (present) parents but we are trying our best. The Mrs. and I have done a decent job cutting it off on the weekends to be fully present with the little man. We are both looking forward to the beach house we rented for the month of November and we both plan to be completely unplugged for at least two weeks out of that month to get a much-needed break. …

I have a lot of little things I’d like to share but none that seem worthy of a full dedicated post. Therefore, I’ve decided to group all those little things into this post with a handful of “bite-size thought-snacks.” They are thoughts I want to document and maybe even drive up some discussion in the comments if anyone has anything thoughts or insights to add. Let’s jump in! Mortgage Rates I think the table below speaks for itself. As I shared last month, rates had become so low that even I couldn’t resist putting a mortgage back on our primary residence. I was born in the 1980s and can’t imagine paying almost 13% or 4X the prevailing interest rate we …

Gen Y Finance Guy Interview 8 Comments

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a guest interview that I wrote for another blog post. Today I will be sharing the post I wrote for Marriage, Kids, and Money. I originally wrote this post back in August of 2018 and it was published in September of 2018. It’s amazing how fast time flies by. I always like reflecting back on what I wrote previously and annotating it with updates from the present day. THE DETAILS How old are you? If you have a family, tell us about them and their ages. Hi, I’m Dom. I’m a 31-year-old married father-to-be. My wife and I were born only 11 days apart and will be 32 later this year. We’re expecting …
