This blog started from a challenge a little over 3 months ago. In order to take this blog to the next level for both myself, current readers, and those readers that will find us in the future, I have joined the Yakezie Alexa Ranking Challenge. Below are the guidelines:

Yakezie Network Submission Guidelines

The Yakezie Network List is an exclusive list reserved for Yakezie members.  For those who want to be on the list, they must first commit to participating in the Yakezie Alexa Ranking Challenge for a duration of 6 months.  The challenge is open to personal finance and lifestyle blogs.

1) Install the Alexa toolbar if not already and comment what your current Alexa ranking is, so we can keep track.

2) Write consistently 2-4 times a week for 6 months.

3) Install the Yakezie badge with pride.

4) Announce on your blog that you have joined the challenge.

5) Selflessly promote others.

Your goal is to break 200,000 in Alexa after 6 months.  If you are already under 200,000, your goal is to break 100,000.  If you are under 100,000, your goal is to break 50,000 and so forth.  This straight forward two-step process helps ensure that we allow those who truly want to be a part of The Yakezie into the network.

The goal of the Challenge is to allow you to develop the best relationships possible and demonstrate your commitment and consistency with your site.  As a result, all Members must go through a 6 month period before being eligible to join the Yakezie Network.  New classes are invited to join in the beginning of the year around January/February and the middle of the year around July/August.

Remember, persistence is the key to success!

Yesterday when I officially joined the challenge my Alexa ranking was 26,214,230. I still have a long way to go over the next 6-months, but this challenge is going to help hold me accountable to this community that we are building here. So far I have done everything on the list above…well # 2 and #5 will be a work in process over the next 6-months. I encourage any other Personal Finance or Lifestyle blogs to join this challenge as well.

Gen Y Finance Guy

Hey, I’m Dom - the man behind the cartoon. You’ll notice that I sign off as "Gen Y Finance Guy" on all my posts, due to the fact that I write this blog anonymously (at least for now). I like to think of myself as the Chief Freedom Officer here of my little corner of the internet. In the real world, I’m a 30-something C-Suite executive. I am trying to humanize finance by sharing my own journey to Financial Freedom. I believe in total honesty and transparency. That is why before I ever started blogging, I decided that I would share all of my own financial stats. I do this not to brag, but instead to inspire motivate, and also to hold myself accountable. My goal is to be a beacon of hope, motivation, and inspiration, for you, the reader, by living life by example and sharing it all here on the blog. My sincere hope is that you will be able to learn from me - both from my successes and my failures! Read More

Wow, just checked my Alexa ranking and I have made some significant progress.

    Alex Rank = 5,762,529 (from 26,214,230)

Only need to climb another 5,562,529 in order to make it into the Yakezie listing.

Wow! It has only been about 2 weeks since joining the challenge and my rank keeps improving almost daily.

Today my Alexa rank is 3,942,604. So almost another 2,000,000 rank improvement in the last 7 days. I guess if you are actively posting on your blog and commenting on others, the rank really starts to improve.

Will be very curious to see how long this pace of improvement takes place. I am actively trying to participate in as many discussions on other peoples blogs as possible. It seems to be a really good strategy to get people back to my blog.

Ok, I will admit that I have become a bit obsessed with checking my Alexa page rank ever since entering the challenge. But I just can’t help it, because every improvement in rank is reassurance that I am making forward progress.

I don’t think it is any coincident that as I have improved in rankings, my traffic has soared and comments have increased ten fold.

In the past 3 days I have improved another 398,866 in the ranks.

The new rank today is 2,182,974.

Would be ecstatic to break below 2,000,000 in the next week or so.

Its been another 3-days and I couldn’t resist checking in on my Alexa Rank.

Looks like we improved another 354,383 spots in the ranking.

    New Rank is 1,828,591

It has officially been 27 days since joining the challenge and the progress made has been so motivating every day.

Improved another 147,214 spots in the rankings.

    New rank is 1,681,377

  8. It is time for another moment to update my ranking.

Well its been 4 days since my last update and in those days I was able to improve my rank by 279,828.

    New Rank = 1,168,721

I also noticed that all of a sudden the number of links coming in went from 23 to 45.

As you can imagine I have been very active in the PF community outside of this blog. So my gut tells me that the Alexa algorithm only updates its links every couple of weeks.

So close to breaking below a million.

    Alex Rank improved by 40,096

    New Rank – 1,057,805

The improvements are getting smaller as you would expect as you have less to improve as you get closer to #1.

  11. Sounds like fun 🙂 I definitely want to try this too once I get some time. Seems like the last few weeks have been hectic for us and don’t know if it’s going to get any better 🙂 Good luck!

It has for sure been some extra motivation to make sure I am doing something everyday for the blog.

As so far I have seen a direct correlation with activity on the blog and around the blog world.

Perfect example is it has been two days since my last update and my new rank is 1,022,811. And the links coming into my site has jumped from 45 to 56.

  12. Post

Since the 22nd of February I have made some more rank advancements. My Alexa rank improved by 89,361.

    New Rank = 968,444

Made it under a Million in about 45 days. Still need to improve another 668,444 by June to be in the top 200,000. But we are well on our way there.

  13. Post

Another 4 days in the bag. We improved our Alexa rank by 90,617.

It still moving at a rapid pace. I thought it would slow significantly after we broke a Million. But it has continued to beat my expectations.

    New Rank: 877,827

  14. Post

Well another 3 days and the improvements continue at sizable clips. Since the last update we have improved by 79,477 ranks.

    New Rank: 798,350

  15. Post

The last 4 days since my last update has really seen a slow down in improvement.

We only improved our ranking by 25,681

    New Rank = 772,669

This was expected though. The lower in rank you go the harder it is going to be to make improvements.

  16. Post

Its been 8 days since my last update, not because I have stopped obsessively checking my Alexa rank, but because it is improving at a slower pace as I whittle my way closer to #1.

    We improved 79,997 rank positions.

    New Rank = 692,672

We now have 86 sites linking in, which is almost double from about 3 weeks ago.

  17. Post

Its been 9 days and enough improvement to give an update.

    We improved 83,734 rank positions.

    New Rank = 608,938

  18. Post

Another 6 days are in the past.

    We improved 33,016 rank positions.

    New Rank = 575,922

Links are still stuck at 86, I am still not sure how often this gets updated by Alexa.

Only 375,922 to hit the target of 200,000.

  19. Post

Time flies when you are writing posts, connecting with awesome folks, working through tech issues, and the 100 other things you do to build a successful and thriving blog.

It’s been 12 days since my last update and we have made some nice progress in improving the ranking.

    We improved 77,771 rank positions.

New Rank = 498,151 (Global), and 106,598 (US rank)

Would love to break into the 300K’s sometime in early May.

  20. Post

It has almost been two weeks since my last update and I am excited to share that we broke into the 300’s.

    We improved 99,212 rank positions.

WOW, that is almost 10,000 positions a day.

    New Rank = 398,939 (Global) 79,572 (US)

Now it may be possible to get down into the 200’s by early may instead at this speed. Not sure what happened, but this is great.

  21. Post

So it’s been over a month since I have updated the rank. That is mostly because the pace has slowed down a bit. However, we have improved enough to merit another update.

    We improved 51,831 rank positions.

    New Rank = 347,108 (Global) 71,129 (US)

It is likely only going to get harder to improve, but we will keep checking and updating when appropriate.

  22. Post

These updates are getting farther apart, but nonetheless I do have an update.

    We improved 26,360 rank positions.

New Rank = 320,748 (Global) 91,287 (US, it slipped a bit)

We still have about 121,000 rank positions to hit our goal of 200,000.
